After the HIV virus enters the body, it starts
reducing the immunity of the host body by lowering levels of CD4 cells. The low
rate of CD4 cells makes the body susceptible to other illnesses whose late
stage leads to AIDS, which is a chronic, life-threatening ailment from which
there are hardly any chances of recovering.
The body once affected by HIV shows symptoms
depending on the stage of the infection. Once the virus enters the body, most
people exhibitflu-like symptoms which are also called Acute Retroviral
Syndrome(ARS). Sometimes, there are chances that the symptoms don’t appear for
years even after contacting the virus. Therefore people might not know that
they have been affected. Therefore it is advised to get it tested.
One of the early signs or indications of ARS is high
fever, which also includes swollen glands, sore throat, and fatigue. The virus
starts spreading throughout the body at an upper stage, and this is the reaction
of the immune system to it. Extreme fatigue or tiredness can be an early or
even later sign of HIV, the affected body feels lethargic and can’t perform
even regular bodily functions without getting tired.
The early symptoms of the HIV infection are flu
which includes extreme muscle and joint pain as well this is often accompanied
by aheadache and skin rash. The patients develop rashes throughout the body in
the form of breakouts. The patients also experience nausea, diarrhea, and
vomiting which keeps reoccurring with regular medication. This, in turn, makes
the body very weak because of the lowers immunity. The early symptoms of the HIV
infection may get better within a few weeks on their own.
The various stages of the HIV infection depend on
the body type of the person, and the genetic makeup, the symptoms, andstepsvary
from person to person. The later stage of the disease can last from a few
months to ten years. During this stage, the virus keeps attacking the CD4 cells
of the body which are responsible for the immune system. Hence making it
challenging to fight other infections, bacterial or viral. Also decreasing the
number of CD4 cells which are responsible for maintaining the immunity levels
in a body.
Persistent diarrhea in the later stage of the
infection can result in weight loss or unusual wasting of the body mass.
Continuous diarrhea and vomiting also is the primary reason for increase weight
loss, but the body is in the process of weakening altogether. Since the body is
more susceptible to infections and doesn’t react to regular medication, this
affects even to undermine the authority further.
Frequent fever and night sweats are also a
significant indication of the HIV infections. Affected people experience night
sweats in the initial and even later stages of the diseases, leaving their
clothes and bed soaked. This is not related to the body temperature, exercise
or the weather, but come like hot flashes like menopausal women experience. But
these are a severe symptom of HIV patients.
Yeast and fungal infection are also seen in HIV
patients, mainly in their mouth and esophagus.
Apart from this patients also have oral or genital herpes, in the early
or the later stages. Having genital herpes also increases the chance of
contracting HIV as it makes it easier for the virus to enter the body.
A continuous cough, fever and weight loss adds to the
body’s inability to react to infections like pneumonia and also other diseases
and illnesses which are life-threatening on their own.
Another symptom of the progressing HIV infection
changes in the nail, thickening, and curving, splitting, and discoloration. A
lowering cognitive and comprehension ability are also signs of HIV in the later
stage. In addition to this there is confusion and difficulty in concentrating, are AIDS-related dementia might also involve
memory afflictions and behavioral issues such as annoyance or persistent anger.
Some people even get reduced motor skills, become clumsy and get bad at
coordinating.
Some patients also get peripheral neuropathy which
makes them get tinkering numbness in their hands and feet. This happens because
the nerves get damaged.
Women affected with HIV get irregular periods also
experience lighter and fewer periods. This can be associated with the other
bodily changes because of the HIV infection such as weight loss, in the later
stage of the infection. Later stage of infection also makes affected women get
menopause earlier compared to uninfected women.
As the HIV infections full-fledged develops into
AIDS, the immune system of the body is severely damaged making the person more
susceptible to opportunistic infections which can prove lethal and
life-threatening eventually. The agency would have otherwise been able to fight
these infections, but in this critical stage, it is complicated for it to react
as the immunity is lowered.
But the HIV infection can also remain latent inside
the body without showing any specific signs or symptoms. Therefore the best way
to detect HIV is to get tested and be sure for yourself. Take precaution which
can be quickly done.
These symptoms give us a sense of how poorly the
mental health of an HIV patient is,and therefore they require most help in term
of their emotional strength and behavior. The society also comes with its own
myths and taboos about AIDS; once there was a long-lasting campaign on how AIDS
doesn’t spread through casual touching, as infected people were getting
ostracised from the society, once their infection was getting detected.
It is also important to understand that HIV and AIDS
aren’t the same things. AIDS is the later more worsened stage of the HIV
infection. Once detected HIV infected people have to treated immediately with
all the emotional support they can garner from the people around them, their
friends and family. They also require an extreme mental makeup to recover from
such a dangerous infection. If you know somebody who has HIV or AIDS symptoms,
it is essential to get them the right treatment immediately.
